E-C Translation Of English-Originated Loanwords From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

With frequent exchanges of China with other countries in economy and culture, many loanwords appear in Chinese, especially the English-originated loanwords. Loanwords rich Chinese language and bring new concepts and ideas which promote the development of society, economy and culture. Currently, there are many studies on the principles and methods of the translation of loanwords, but most of them rest on such levels as transliteration, literal translation, free translation, transliteration with explanation, literal translation with explanation and so forth. Researchers studied the translation of Loanwords through analyzing their pronunciation, shape, meaning of loanwords and characteristics of Chinese characters themselves. However, there is seldom paper exploring the translation of loanwords from the eco-translatology perspective. Also the existing research on eco-translatology theory is mainly found in the sectors of theoretical study, or the study of certain writers and their works. This theory has rarely been applied to the E-C translation of loanwords.The thesis argues that the existence and development of a language shares some intrinsic similarities to some degree with the ecology of natural beings. The emergence, changes and disappearance of loanwords are similar to the evolution of the natural world with the features and rules of its own. The author argues that the evolutionary principle "Survival of the Fittest" also.holds true for explaining the phenomenon of loanwords in a language. The translation of loanwords is a dynamic changing way that constantly selecting and adapting its own ecological environment. Darwin’s "Survival of the Fittest" was firstly applied into the eco-translatology theory as a translation principle. Translation is defined as "the translator’s selection and adaptation to the translational eco-environment".The thesis will take the eco-translatology theory as its theory framework to research the English translation of loanword in modern Chinese language. This thesis combines the translation of English originated loanwords with eco-translatology theory, respectively employing two theory focuses originating from eco-translatology:the "translator’s selection and adaptation to the translational eco-environment" theory and the three-dimensional(linguistics dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension) transformation theory so as to explore the translation of English originated loanwords from both the translation process aspect as well as translation principle and method. The significance of this study is to explore a new perspective for translation of English originated loanwords so as to optimize its translation.On the basis of previous researchers’achievements, the writer of the paper will make a diachronic and synchronic study of English-originated loanword translation from the aspects of different periods, analyze the translating characteristics and changing rules of the translations of English originated loanwords in different social contexts and explore the feasibility and method of applying the eco-translatology in the translation of English loanwords, then summarize optimized translation methods. This thesis is composed of six parts:The introduction briefs the background, purpose and significance, methodology of this study as well as the organization of the thesis; Chapter One analyses the definition and classification of loanword, and makes a review of previous researches on loanword translation and eco-translatology; Chapter Two introduces the Eco-translatological theory focuses firstly, then explores the applicability and feasibility of applying this theory to loanword translation, finally the guidance of this theory on the translation principle, translation method, translation process and translation criteria of loanwords are discussed; Chapter Three discusses the application of the eco-translatology theory, first, an analysis is made on current social eco-environment and translational eco-environment so as to find adaptive methods on loanword translation, then the eco-translatological method "three-dimensional transformation theory" is applied to loanword translation, which explores from linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension in detailed levels, to adapt different levels on Chinese linguistics, culture and communication, different translating methods are selected accordingly; Chapter Four talks about enlightenments of the eco-translatology theory to future loanword translation. Under the guidance of eco-translatology, this chapter tries to illustrate the translational tendencies of loanword in order to find out translation strategies for future loanwords and requirements for a translator since translator plays an indispensable role in the future loanword translation. The final part comes to the conclusion; it sums up the findings of this research, evaluates its limitations and provides suggestions for further research.
