A Research On The Surrender-accepting Issue Of The Wei Jin Southern And Northern Dynasties

Wars have been an integral part of the history of Chinese Civilization. As acritical element of wars, surrender-accepting has exerted influence on politics, economy,culture and ethnic relations to varying degrees. As a result, the issue ofsurrender-accepting should be a critical topic in the study of military matters.The Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties were a period of chaos andturbulence. Political turmoil and instability had resulted in a number ofsurrender-accepting cases, in which the winners had taken different attitudes andmeasures based on the social status and number of the losers. The way ofsurrender-accepting in this period, inheriting the tradition of the past dynasties, ismulti-faceted. The winners of wars had taken measures such as reorganizing enemytroops, promoting enemy leaders, resettling and dismissing surrenderors so as tostabilize the political situation and foster a benevolent image. These measures areclosely connected with the development of military affairs, politics, economic andsocial activities.By utilizing the knowledge of history, sociology, economics, ethnology, literature,and the methodology of literature analysis and comparison, this paper, based on officialhistory, essays and poetry, attempts to summarize surrender-accepting issue in the WeiJin Southern and Northern Dynasties and analyze the ways of dealing with thesurrendering parties and its influence and the characteristics of the times. The authorhopes to reveal the features of the times in terms of military activities and demonstratethe importantposition of this period in Chinese ancient military history.
