The Organization And Application Of Spatio-temporal Data From Chinese Local Records

Chinese local records were drawn to a particular administrative area, including the history and present situation of many natural and social aspects, so they are called "the encyclopedia of one place". Text-based Chinese local records contained a wide range of topics and compiled continuously with distinct characters of the times and the areas. Therefore, the texts from Chinese local records have significant spatial and temporal characteristics; however spatio-temporal analysis is the core of geographic information systems. Many scholars have paid great attention to the development and utility of Chinese local records, and proposed the proposition that Chinese local records are urgent to develop. Under the background of GIS been widely used, we use its powerful skills of management, analysis and data display to provide solutions for the organization and utility of Chinese local records.The text data used in this paper come from modern Chinese local records. This paper aimed at the unstructured, multi-dimensional and other features of spatio-temporal text data in Chinese local records, and centered on the technology road map:"descriptive characteristics analysis of spatio-temporal data---unified expression of spatio-temporal information---spatio-temporal data modeling---spatio-temporal extraction". This paper focused on the organization method of spatio-temporal data in Chinese local records in order to lay the foundation for informatization and social applications of them. The content and achievements of this paper include the following aspects:(1) Analysis of the descriptive characteristics of spatio-temporal data from Chinese local records.This paper summarizes the features of language and semantic structure of time data, spatial data and thematic (attribute) data in the modern Chinese local records, and further analyzed the characteristics of the texts which describe the evolution of the spatio-temporal data in order to provide the basis for spatio-temporal data modeling.(2) Spatio-temporal data modeling and the construction of databases.This paper proposed the unified expression method of the spatio-temporal information from modern Chinese local records, realized the process that the thematic information matches with the spatio-temporal information, and designed the organization models of spatio-temporal data. Based on the existing Chinese text processing technology, this paper acquired automatically the spatio-temporal data in the modern Chinese local records, and used PostGIS to store them and make some queries about them.(3) Case studyBased on B/S mode, under the development environment of MyEclipse, this paper used GeoServer to publish local history maps and developed the system called Chinese Local Records GIS. This paper then took Chinese local records of Nanjing as examples and selected the ancient administrative divisions and population data as topics to provide a case about how GIS was used in the informazition of Chinese local records.
