Teaching material is always regarded as the carrier of knowledge, whichis the necessary tool in teaching activities. The quality of teaching materialsdirectly influences both students’ learning effectiveness and the achievementof teaching objective. With the extensive development of internationalcommunication, English, as the universal language, has become an importanttool for communication. Thus English learning and teaching are attached tothe great importance. In2004, the Ministry of Education of Chinapromulgated the latest “College English Standard of Requirements” whichrequires that English teaching lay emphasis on the cultivation of studentslistening and speaking competence to adapt to the development of theinternational situation. On this situation, a great number of teaching materialsaiming at training students listening and speaking competence swarm into thebook market. However, these teaching materials are of varying quality.Whether they can be used to improve learners’ listening and speakingcompetence need a further research.The new edition of Coursebook21stCentury New English: Viewing,Listening and Speaking which was published in2011by Fudan UniversityPress is applied to the students who major in primary English teaching inGeneral Education College of Inner Mongolia Normal University. Theresearch purpose for this thesis is to explore whether this set of teachingmaterials is suitable to these students, what are the advantages anddisadvantages of it, and how to effectively apply this set of books to Englishteaching. Based on internal and external evaluation theories on the evaluationof teaching materials, the writer devised a set of evaluation method in thisthesis. According to the textual analysis on teaching materials, data analysisof questionaries and interview from teachers and students, the writer collectedmuch information about the application of this teaching material and theproblems which are involved in it. And after the analysis on the research results the writer put forward some referential advice to the composers andusers of the teaching materials.There are mainly five parts in this thesis. Chapter one is a generalintroduction to the research background, purpose,significance and points outthree research questions. Chapter two is the literature review in which theprimary English teaching, standard of teaching materials evaluation arediscussed. Chapter three, is a textual analysis of the teaching materialCoursebook21stCentury New English: Viewing, Listening and Speaking. Inchapter four, the writer carried out a detailed dada analysis on thequestionaries and interviews which are conducted between teachers andstudents. Chapter five is the research conclusion. Through this research, thewriter found the research result and some obvious advantages anddisadvantages of this set of teaching material, put forward some constructivesuggestions on the application of this set of books, and talked about thelimitations of this research. Through these suggestions, the writer hopes thatthis set of books can be applied properly and effectively in the languageteaching.Through the analysis of questionnaires, the research result showed thatCoursebook21stCentury New English: Viewing, Listening and Speaking issuitable for the English majors of primary education in Inner MongoliaNormal University. Teachers and students who are using the set of coursebookhold a positive attitude towards its design and arrangement. Learning with theassistance of this coursebook, students have made progress in linguisticcultural knowledge and skills. It also helps the students in English tests.Meanwhile there are some deficiencies in the coursebook, such as too muchcontents, listening and speaking strategies mentioned in it are not sufficientand single supporting teaching resources.
