It is essential to choose a fine course-book which iscontributing to the accomplishment of teaching content and the achievementof teaching objectives. New Horizon College English: viewing, listening andspeaking has been popularly adopted in many colleges and universities sinceit is published in2004. This paper has investigated and researched on the useof this course-book in Inner Mongolia Normal University and InnerMongolia Industry University, which aims to get to know how the teachersand students are satisfy with this course-book and to find some merits anddemerits in the process of using it on the purpose of trying to give a fewsuggestion on a better understanding and using of it and some reference toimprove this course-book in future.Based on the relevant theory of textbook evaluation, the author reviewssome major relevant research theories and results at home and abroad.According to this, the author sets up a working model for the evaluationwhich includes two processes. Firstly, the author analyses the textualcharacters of the course-book from the aspects of the background, guidingideology, composition and character of course-book.Secondly, in the way ofquestionnaire, The author investigates and analyses the currently situation ofusing of this course-book, those who accpect questionnaire survey includepart of the non-English major students enrolled in2010and some teachers inInner Mongolia normal university and in Inner Mongolia Industry University.In order to make up for varies deficiencies of the research, the author alsointerviews10students and5teachers about their opinions of the course-book.The data are collected and analyzed with the statistic software of SPSS17.0, which gets the following conclusions:New Horizon College English: viewing, listening, speaking is basicallyaccording with the College English Curriculum Requirement. Teachers andstudents are wholly satisfied with this course-book. They have commonly viewed: content and layout of the course-book are reasonable. Tone andImage quality of CD and Video equipped with it are satisfied and the networkteaching assistant provided is helpful to the students who have had used thisbook for the need of self-learning. Additionally, the topics are close tostudents’ life. Exercise are helpful to students to attend various Englishlistening tests at same time, students’ and teachers’ attitude to the difficultydegree of overall course-book are reasonable. It is moderate for the content,which could be flexibly chosen according to their need, thus, it is helpful toimprove listening ability and strategy.Of course, this course-book also has some specific weakness: the videoand listening situation of course-book are not well closely associated withdaily life, culture knowledge of course-book are not very well in improvingstudents’comprehensive qualities of language and culture and communicativeability. The course-book content volumes are too much to finish thecourse-book content according to the normal course time arranged by bothuniversities.
