This is my report on translation of The Life of Nelson. The author of this original book isA. T. Mahan and this book was published by Bexley Publications in England in2006. Thewhole translation work involves four steps, including pre-preparation, original translation, revisions and conclusions and preparation for the translation report. I put my translationtheories into the translation of the autobiography The Life of Nelson, analyzing and solvingmany translation problems, such as translation related to history and culture, figures of speech, technical terms and so on. In addition, the report explains my translation based on manytranslation strategies from perspective of free and literal translation, domestication andforeignizaiton. Meanwhile, We should pay more attention to the following key points beforewe begin to conduct translation. First of all, we’d better adopt literal translation when wetranslate English figures of speech into Chinese, attempting to keep the source text correspondto translation in term of the choice of words and rhetorical structure. However, we have totackle some typical cases in a flexible way. To keep translation naturally clear and coherentand avoid translationese, free translation is a better way by using extended meaning or addingnecessary words. The second point is about how we handle some terminologies. Only throughaccurate and comprehensive verification can we do terminological translation. The third one Iwant to mention is that we have to consider the readers’ acceptability during the translation ofautobiography. However, the translator should not be limited by the readers’ expectation andperspective but try to broaden their expectation and perspective. As the author of translationof The Life of Nelson, I hope that my translation work can make a little contribution to thetranslation of autobiography.
