A Translation Report On Introducing Translation Studies

This is a report on the translation of the translation theory book-Introducing Translation Studies:Theories and Application by UK’s Professor Jeremy Mundy, of which the Introduction, Chapter1and2are the source text. Published by the Routledge Press in April,2001, the book is a collection of various key translation theories by different publishers in different languages. Meanwhile, it also summarizes and criticizes those theories. In Introduction, Mundy has given the concept of translation studies-the research center of this book and listed many key writings on the subject. Mundy also gives an introduction to the potential-readers and usage of the book. The first chapter discusses the main issues of translation studies, including the concept of the translation and translation studies, a brief history of the discipline, the Holmes/Toury’map’, developments since the1970s. The second chapter;describes some of the major issues that are discussed in writings about translation up to the middle of the twentieth century and introduces some of the classic writings on translation over the years.The main content of this report are composed of four parts:Part one is the Introduction, briefly introducing the translation project background, objectives, significance and the structure of this report. Part Two is about the source text, including the author’s introduction, the analysis of the main content of the source text, stylistic features of the source text, and the informative features of the source text. Part Three is about translation process, including pre-translating work, difficulties and methods while-translating and the proof reading of the translation. The difficulties in the translation process lie in the translation of specialized terminology, theories and complex sentences. The methods author used mainly include:amplification, omission, conversion, long sentence processing and so on. Part Four concludes with the lessons, and unsolved problems in the translation project.The author has acquired some translation skills from this translation project. First, the author realizes the necessity to master some translation theories for a translation major. Second, translators should take their work seriously and avoid taking words literally. Meanwhile, translators also should consistently cultivate themselves and improve their bilingual competence. Finally, good translations come from times of proofreading. The translator himself should be patient and continuously revise the translation works.
