Funeral rituals as a sociocultural phenomenon, involves thousands of households,and refers to the building of socialist material progress and spiritual progress in theestablishment of a harmonious socialist society. Over the years, people have beenpaying more attention to a series of ecological environment issues triggered by theurge to satisfy the needs of “living”, but the ecological environment issues broughtabout by man’s “death” as opposed to his “living”, however have not been mentionedto the same level of importance. Following the constant aggravation of issuesregarding population, resources and environment, funerals being one crucial cycle inthe life and development of humankind, have created numerous environmentalproblems which become more and more prominent in the centre of the global greenwave. This article starts out from the perspective of environmental ethics, conductinga realistic analysis of green funerals, and proposing an environmentally moralcounterplan for the sustainable development of green funerals..Green funerals as a new concept of the green transformation of funeral rituals inan age of ecological progress, are also new ethics and new systems of theecologicalisation of funeral rituals, as well as being the fullfilment of environmentalethics of funeral rituals and a new practice of ecological progress. Through thedescription of green funerals as possessing characteristics such as beingresource-saving, environment-friendly, human-caring, harmonious with the universeand men; and functions such as the enlightenment of civilisation, eco-environmentalprotection, value enhancement, human culture memorial, and the transformation oflife. Green funerals highlight the enviromental ethics spirit in being nature-friendly, itpersists in regarding humankind as the basis of environmental value, and promotes anecological spirit of justice in the symbiotic harmony between men and the universe.Development of green funeral in China, today’s widespread around the threemajor non sustainable development, has the problem of anti ecological developmentand unreasonable and unfair development etc.. The main reason lies in the lag ofecological environment green burial concept understanding is not in place, notscientific cognition the lackof ecological thinking,quick values work, ecologicaljustice consciousness is weak, the whole society’secological culture constructionThe unsustainable issues in the development of green funerals, and their relatedreasons, are pointed out as thinking habits and strong superstition, the lack of organicintegral ecological ideologies, the impediment of the instant gratification culture, the lag of the establishment of an ecological funeral culture by the society at large,amongst other causes have resulted in unsustainable issues such as the simple greentransformation of the traditional funeral models, the competition between livingpeople and the dead for tombs with good fengshui, problems of unfairness in thedevelopment of green funerals, and non-ecological phenomenons. In order toimplement the sustainable development of green funerals and the nature-friendlyenviromental ethic spirit of green funerals, with mankind as a basis for environmentalvalues, and a spirit of ecological justice towards the symbiosis of mankind and theuniverse, it’s is necessary to address the unsustainable issues concerned in the processof developing green funerals, to abide by the environmental ethical principles of greenfunerals, to persist in adhering to the environmetal ethic boundaries of green funerals,to follow the code of ethics of green funerals, and to boost the conscious initiation ofgreen funerals.
