A Study Of Li Zhaoguo’s Translation Of Huangdi Neijing·Su Wen

As one of the four classical works of traditional Chinese medicine, Huangdi Neijing·SuWen is the earliest medical treasure of our country and it has been guiding the development ofTraditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for more than two thousand years. As a requiredreading for the TCM learners, Neijing plays a significant role in studying the ancientcivilization and medical history of China. Since the year1925, there have been many Chineseand Western scholars to translate Neijing, making it an important content in thecommunication of cultural exchange of TCM. Among the various versions, Li Zhaoguo’stranslation is representative for it is the first full version made by mainland scholar.According to the information available, there are relatively a few comprehensive studieson Li’s version. The theory of eco-translatology put forward by the Chinese scholar HuGengshen provides a new angle for the study of the translation of TCM classics. This thesistakes Li Zhaoguo’s version Huangdi Neijing·Su Wen as the research object, analyzing theeco-translatological views embodied in his version by descriptive method and case study tocertify the interpretive force of this theory and expect to improve the study on the translationof Huangdi Neijing.This study came to the conclusion that Li’s translation is the product of his activelyadapting to his translational eco-environment which can be divided into two kinds, namely,the external translational eco-environment and the internal one. In this thesis, the externaltranslational eco-environment mainly includes three factors: the source text, socialenvironment and translation initiator. The internal translational eco-environment mainlyrefers to the translator’s need and competence. Before his translation, Li made selectiveadaptation to both outer and inner translational eco-environment. As for the selection stage,the thesis chiefly explores the three dimensions of linguistics, culture and communication.The transformation on linguistic dimension is discussed from three aspects including lexicon,syntax and text. As for the culture dimension, the transformation is explored from thetranslation of culture-loaded words. And the communicative dimension is expounded fromLi’s combination of semantic translation and communicative translation and his choice oftranslation style which is reflected from his translation of the rhetorical devices. In terms of eco-translatology, Li’s successful translation of Huangdi Neijing is due to thefact that he actively made selective adaptation to his translational eco-environment and madeadaptive selection in the process of translation. On the ground of adapting to the outer andinner translational eco-environment, he selected corresponding translation strategies to get atranslation with the “highest degree of integration of adaptation and selection.”...
