| Since reform and opening up, China has made tremendous achievements in aspects ofeconomy, politics, culture and military, etc. China’s international standing is becomingmore important; therefore, other countries anticipate knowing about China. The annualgovernment work report makes a conclusion of the fruit achieved in the last year andasserts a plan for the next year, which is a necessary channel for foreign countries tounderstand China and attracts the attention of the world. The accuracy of the governmentwork report translation is associated with foreign readers’ objective acquaintance withChina. This dissertation mainly discusses the transfer redundancy encountered whentranslating The2013Government Work Report of Changchun. Transfer redundancy meansthat the translator literally transfers the Chinese expression to the target language withoutconsideration of the idiomatic English expression, and causes redundancy which affectsforeign readers’ acceptance of the information. Therefore, the translator should makeefforts to avoid transfer redundancy caused by the idiomatic expression of the nativelanguage. In this dissertation, the writer at first introduces the source text, and then puts forwardthat a main problem in Chinese-English translation of political documents is transferredundancy. Through case studies at sentence and discourse level, the writer presents threestrategies: eliminate unnecessary words, avoid unnecessary repetition, and improvecapacity in Chinese-English exchange. At last, the writer argues that translation should notbe understood as an exchange of text between two languages, but as a communication tool.As a translator, the writer should keep reinforcing language foundation, enhancinglanguage ability in Chinese and English, especially in English, to gradually improvetranslation competence. |
