Tragedy focuses on the living of human beings. It not only presents whatour lives are like but also introspects why they are. Therefor, tragedy becomes aserious form of literature and art. Since tragedy was created, for some subjectslike philosophy and aesthetic, it has been a controversial issue what its essentialqualities are. While a compelling answer for the question can explain the truemeaning of tragedy and help playwrights create more wisely, there is no settledone because the philosophers before modern times seldom reached theirconclusions based on specific text analysis and induction, but based on theira-priori philosophy. Learning their lessons, the author tries to analyze thequestion basing on his own reading experience on the acknowledged tragediesof Ancient Greek and Shakespeare. The thesis starts studying from the narrationof the playwrights. After organizing the attainments gained in reading, theauthor concludes that classical tragedies share a common narration mode whichcan be expressed as “a violent world and uprising individuals”.The concept“world” which indicates all existences around every individualis roughly from Heidegger. When we treat all that the protagonisten suffers aspart of the world, a tragedy will appear as a story about a violent world andsome uprising individuals. We then will find the tragedy narration not onlydepicts the typicality of abusers and victims, but also characters their behaviorsand minds in some specific ways. The suffers and rebellions of the victimsexpressed in the narration mode factually represent and respond to thepowerlessness and sense of lofty that every individual can experience in adifferent form and degree through its life. As a result, the readers can feel themoral sense, fear and pity, re-awaken their limitation in introspection and purifytheir souls. In demonstration, the thesis mainly adopts the following research methods:logical deduction, case study and textual comparison. The theory resources thatsupport the basic argument are from Aristotle, Schopenhauer and Heidegger.
