Type A behavior pattern (TABP) was characterized by competitiveness and hostility, time urgency and impatience. These traits could have a significant impact on physical and mental health. The reason of the episode of depression, on the one hand, was that patients occupied with negative life events. Specifically, TABP high scorers were described as being work-oriented, hard-driving and fast-moving individuals, who are often irritable, annoyed and impatient. However, what the mechanism of type A interact with depression severity remained unknown, there existed little research about this issues. Therefore, our research included three parts. In the first part, we hope to find that which personality traits or behavioral pattern interact with type A to affect depression. Then, according to the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we could explore the relation between type A and depression in the more concrete. Therefore, by using voxel-based mophrometry (VBM), we detected what is the neuromechanism between type A and depression. Moreover, we focused on that whether the cortical regions predicts the changes of depression severity. In the first experiment, there was 308 individuals taken part in our research, every subject finished a series of questionnaires including Pattern A Behavior Scale (PABS), Beck depression investigation (BDI), Eysenk personality questionnaire (EPQ). The behavioral data were analyzed using the statistical software package SPSS 16.0 and AMOS 17.0. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression and path analysis were carried out to examine the relationships between the PABS score and neuroticism, extraversion and depression. We found that there was direct impact between type A and depression, and that type A has indirect impact on depression by neuroticism. In the second study, there are 326 healthy college students from southwest university take part in our study. Every participants complete the PABS and Self-rating depression scale (SDS) before MRI scanning. We told the participants closed their eyes when scanning. The results showed that individual type A behavior pattern was associated with larger gray matter volume of a cluster of areas that included the left subgenual anterior cingulate gyrus (sgACC). sgAGG might play an important role in emotion regulation. Moreover, in this study we use mediation analysis method to investigate the relationship between type A behavior pattern and depression. We use the volume of sgACC brain region results as mediation variable, the score PABS as independent variable and the score of SDS as the dependent variable. The result showed that the volume of the brain region results was partly mediation the relationship between type A behavior pattern and depression. It means that type A behavior pattern influence the level of depression partly by the volume of left sgACC.Our research aimed at exploring the effect of type A and depression from the behavior and neuromeghanism by using VBM analysis. The results demonstrated that type A has a direct influence to depression, moreover, has an indirect influence to depression by neuroticism and extraversion. In addition, the influence of type A to depression may be the structural or functional relationship between subgenual cingulated gyrus. Our research has no limitation of sample size, by using correlation, regression and path analysis, we established behavior model of type A and depression, and by using multiple liner regression, we explore the structure basis of type A Moreover, we also used apply the mediation analysis method to investigate the neuronal mechanism of type A behavior pattern and its related brain structure with depression, and the results showed that type A behavior pattern influence the level of depression partly by the volume of left sgACC. Type A behavior pattern may influence the level of depression might through the emotion regulation ability of sgACC. This study not only provide the proof of neuronal mechanism for the study of relationship of type A behavior pattern and depression, but also provide new idea for the study of the relationship between personal characteristics and emotion and felling.
