| This paper is a research thesis, which, based on text typology of Reiss and Newmark, makes a discussion about translation methods and skills of abstracts in Chinese scientific and technical papers. This paper firstly presents an introduction to the origin and development of text typology as well as the representatives and theoretical significance of this theory. Secondly, this paper gives an introduction to the similarities and differences between Chinese and English abstracts. The similarities mainly lie in the definition, functions, characteristics, category and writing requirements, while the differences mainly lie in the language divergence which further points to the vocabulary, tense, voice, person and sentence structure. Finally, based on text typology, this paper introduces the translation steps and translation strategy for Chinese-English translation of abstracts, and the steps are called four-step translation model which are definition of translation purpose, analysis of the source text, translation of the source text and proofreading and revision, and the translation strategy is semantic translation combined with communicative translation, or literal translation combined with free translation. This paper aims to provide some practical suggestions useful to the regularization of writing and the translation of Chinese abstracts. |
