It is universally acknowledged that the theory of postcolonial feminism has drawn much attention recently. Postcolonial feminism has been widely studied by many scholars, especially the theory of black feminism which is an important branch of postcolonial feminism in America. Among all American black women writers, the study on Toni Morrison and Alice Walker attracts eyes of all people who pay attention to the fighting of the third world women against all the unfairness on them in the world. For the increase of American black women’s movement against unfairness after the Civil Rights Movement, more and more people began to throw their research focus on black women’s living circumstances. Thus, Alice Walker, as one of the most important black women writers who wrote for all black women becomes one of the most important black women writers whose works are widely studied at that time. Among all her works, the Color Purple is the most widely studied one and besides it, Meridian is also a work which contains Alice Walker’s attitude to black women’s struggle against racial discrimination and patriarchal oppression. In this thesis, the author analyzes Meridian from the perspective of postcolonial feminism and it will enrich the research significance of postcolonial feminism well in American black women’s fighting. In the first place, black women’s dilemma in Meridian is described in detail. Among it, reasons of colonial rules and patriarchal oppression for black women’s low status are described. The author analyzed black women’s low status from both social and familial angles. Under those two oppressive powers, black women in Meridian become identity losers. Then it comes the most important part of the black women’s struggle. The Civil Rights Movement as an important movement struggling for all black people’s legal rights also becomes the main road for black women’s fighting against colonial rules. The author also analyzes the importance of the movement in black women’s struggle in Meridian. At the same time, the author analyzes black women’s challenge for patriarchal power through escaping from the responsibility of a wife and a mother temporally in the work. Finally, through describing the protagonist’s behavior in her hometown, the author shows people how black women in Meridian become identity seekers. With the in depth of the author’s research, black women’s achievements are showed to people, that black women are accepted both by the society and the family, and also become the inheritor of black culture. This thesis combines the concrete historical event with the postcolonial feminism to study the practical significance of the theory and it will also inspire more and more people to pay attention to the status of the third world women.
