A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a drama which is full of fantasy and celebrates the true love in the world. Shakespeare is one of the most dazzling playwrights in European Renaissance period, and his works clearly demonstrate a humanism spirit. Shakespeare’s plays usually focus on singing beautiful free love. He advocates pure love rather than impure love.In the A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it brings together the supreme authority represented by the Duke of Athens, the young aristocrats and artisans of society represented by four young men, and the fairy represented by Oberon the King and Titania the Queen. This play, mixed with fantastic world, the world of myth and the real world, is full of conflicts. But all these seemingly conflicts serve a harmonious theme:“ the course of true love never did run smooth ”. On the road of true love, not only the aristocrats but also the fairy, they will face great difficulties but will persevere and ultimately arrive at a happy ending. This paper is composed of three parts, which include three body chapters. The introduction includes the purpose of this thesis and the literature review. Chapter one is to analyze conflicts within characters. On the one hand, this chapter explores the conflicts between Hermia and Egeus. On the other hand, this chapter examines the self-conflict of Theseus. Chapter two analyzes conflicts and tensions in the language from two aspects. Firstly it discusses the conflicts and tension through rhetorical devices. Then, it analyzes the conflicts and tension through dialogues from the perspective of Halliday’s mood metaphor. Chapter three deals with the harmony within conflicts. The conclusion part summarizes the main points and restates the argument of the thesis.
