Lexicographical definition is an indispensable part of a dictionary and the correctness of the definition determines the understanding and comprehension of the entries for the users. Chinese-English dictionaries play an important role in the English learning of the learners in China, so the significance of the definition is self-evident. Due to various reasons, there are still a lot of problems and shortcomings in the definition of Chinese disyllabic adjectives, which is urgent to be dealt with for the lexicographers. Both qualitative and quantitative study will be applied in this thesis. It attempts to analyze the representation problems of Chinese disyllabic adjectives in the mainstream Chinese-English dictionaries through sampling survey. Based on the Multidimensional Definition Model, this thesis aims to construct a multidimensional definition representation for the Chinese disyllabic adjectives in Chinese-English dictionaries. Firstly, the thesis will conduct a comprehensive analysis on the problems and shortcomings based on the data collected from the Chinese-English Dictionary(Third Edition)(CED3). Then, the thesis will resort to the CLEC corpus to analyze the current using situation of English learners in China. Finally, descriptive analysis and error analysis will be adopted to study the presentation model of Chinese disyllabic adjectives from the perspective of dictionary users. In this thesis, the writer finds that some drawbacks exit in the definition of Chinese disyllabic adjectives in CED3: imperfect definition including no POS labeling, equivalents in disorder and short of pragmatic information; improper selection of examples; dealing with headwords with multiple part-of-speech vaguely and lack of necessary supplement information. The new multidimensional definition model is constructed to remedy the deficits in the traditional definition model and to hope to improve the users’ output abilities of the second language.
