On The Definition Of Monosyllabic Hand Verbs In The Internal Oriented Chinese-English Learners' Dictionaries Based On Multidimensional Definition Model

Lexicographical definition is the most important part in compilation of dictionaries. The validity of the definition plays an important role in the usage rate of dictionaries and users' acquisition. Chinese-English Dictionary is indispensable for Chinese EFL Learners, and it is of great significance to improve users' output ability. Verbs of hand movement are an important part of verbs, which have strong word-building ability and they are one of the typical representatives of verbs. Both English and Chinese are rich in them. The frequency of hand verbs in everyday vocabulary is very high. Therefore, the study of definition of monosyllabic hand verbs in the internal oriented Chinese-English Dictionary is of great practical significance.Combining with the qualitative and quantitative research, the thesis systematically analyzes the problems in three internal oriented Chinese-English Dictionaries by adopting sampling survey. By the analysis of hand verbs, it is found that the definition of hand verbs in the present Chinese-English Dictionaries has some drawbacks, like the inconformity of the target language and original language, lack of pragmatic information, disordered arrangement of senses, etc. On the one hand, combining with the principles of Multidimensional Definition Model, the thesis attempts to improve the definition quality. On the other hand, based on the structures of Multidimensional Definition Model, the thesis well-establishes the definition system and constructs the optimization for nine representation components of hand verbs under the guidance of the principles of Multidimensional Definition Model.The thesis makes sampling analysis of hand verbs in the internal oriented Chinese-English Dictionaries, which is beneficial to discover the existing problems of hand verbs systematically and objectively. The construction of Multidimensional Definition Model for hand verbs can make up for the deficiency of the traditional definition model, and through illustrating, the scientific and practical features of the definition model is highlighted in a more systematical way. Therefore, the thesis can provide theoretical basis for the compilation of Chinese-English Learners' Dictionary.
