Comparative Study On Playwrights——Xu Fen And Long Xueyi

Scenario is the foundation of a drama. Playwright, as the creator of scenario, plays a key role in the opera creation. With the development of film and television and the popularity of Internet transmission means like Wechat in recent years, Sichuan opera now is also confronted with difficulties like the decrease of audience, the lack of fund and theobstacles of inheritance. In the context of new era, the first step to resolve these problems is script innovation based on the inheritance of tradition. Hence, the role of playwrightsbecomes particularly important.Sichuan opera boasts a excellent group of playwrights and its scenarios are famous for strong literariness in the field of opera. Xu Fen and Long Xueyi are the most representative playwrights in the field of Sichuan opera since the reform andopening up of China. This thesis makes comparisons between aspects including their growing experience, cultural difference of respective living areas, thinking pattern and personality characteristics, placing them respectively in the context of two different development centers——Chengdu and Chongqing. And comparisons and contracts will be made concerning the differences and similarities about their work style, characterization, ideological connotation and artistic treatment by script analysis. The efforts and achievements these two playwrights made throughout their own creation practice concerning the inheritance of tradition and the exploration of innovation will also be learned. This thesis will achieve a further knowledge of characteristics and developing status of Sichuan opera in Chengdu and Chongqing through comparison of differences and similarities, thus providingexperience worthy of learning for Chengdu and Chongqing to enter a new stage.
