| In early 17 century, marine trade in east asia was prosperous at one time. But the along with the political unity, the contries in east asia began to stabilize the surrounding through the ban on foreign trade. In Japan, tokugawa shogunate carried out Sakoku policy, which was made up of ban on Catholicism and trade protectionism. For the reason, oversea chinese, who lived in Nagasaki, were appoined as Chinese Interpreters, which is in charge of foreign affairs. At first Chinese Interpreters only in charge of interpratation in trade. Along with the promotion of Sakoku policy, tokugawa shogunate entrusted more task to Chinese Interpreters. Because of it, the amouts of Chinese Interpreters was increased and the post complicated. Since the influenced by the Sakoku policy, totsuji sever relations between the mainland. Though they remained Chinese by Chinese temples and oversea Chinese merchant. But they were assimilated into Japanese culture finally. In this thesis, I argue the development of Chinese Interpreters on the one hand and their assimilation into Japanese culture on the other. |
