The intellectuals who thought they were also Christians were a special group in the Republican period, which were not regarded as real Christians by the westerners and were treated as westernized Chinese who have forgotten their ancestry by the Chinese. This thesis will focus on the research about Luo yunyan who was a representative figure among the group to show this group’ social care through Mr Luo’ life story. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is about the brief introduction and analysis on Luo yunyan’ life story and the origin of his thoughts. Because of the lack of materials, the introduction about his life story will center on the period before the establishment of PRC.I will discuss the origin of his thoughts from two aspects, the Confucianism learned by his parents when he was a child and the Christian influenced by the education both in China and America. He was greatly influenced by the minds of Christian from the late of 19th centry to the early of 20th centry. He thought the church should advance with the times and show care to the social problems. He also advocated religious reform and to rebuild "the lost social ideal of the Christian world". Besides, His ideal was to be a patriot and also a devout. The following chapters are the main parts of the thesis, which will focus on the narrative and research of Luo yunyan’thoughts and practice. The second chapter is about Luo yunyan’thoughts and practice, which mainly discusses his ideas and practice about the reason of drug problems、the harm of drugs、the ways to ban drugs and his objection to the opium monopoly. The third chapter is about Luo’ educatioon thoughts and practice. Luo thought education should be developed in order and advocated the churchs and Christians ought to educate the civilians because of their huge responsibilities and obligations to the education. He also held that we should treat the students’ movements in a rational way and should not follow others in a blind way ignoring the improvement of ourselves. The forth chapter mainly talks about Luo’s efforts to the integration of the eastern and western culture, his religious thoughts and practice. Luo tried to integrate the religion and society to build a "friendship" bridge between them. Luo held that the churches should take part in the social activities and spread the gospel. This thesis try to expose the truth about the Christian intellectuals’sense of social responsibility and social ideals and highlight this special group’social status and influence at that time through the research about Luo yunyan.
