Translating The Demonstrative "this" In Global Environment Of Policing

This is a translation report based upon the translation of Chapter12and Chapter13of Global Environment of Policing. In the process, the author found that thedemonstrative “this” was seen here and there as discourse deixis in the original text,thus the textual, the indexical function and the determination of the indicativemeaning turn out to be a major problem in translation practice. The present endeavorhas made a brief description of the anaphoric usage of “this” from the perspective ofdiscourse analysis and the cohesive functions of the English demonstratives. Thepaper has also introduced four translation methods, including literal translation,repetition, generalization and omission, to guide the translation practice.
