In recent years, the Chinese progressive complex sentences have caught the attention of linguistic scholars; however, the interlingual comparison studies in progressive complex sentences of languages such as Vietnamese and Chinese have not yet been fully developed. The thesis will provide an in-depth multidimensional analysis of Chinese and Vietnamese progressive complex sentences by using the comparative method. The results have found many common characteristics between Chinese and Vietnamese progressive complex sentences. The speech pauses, structural features, semantic relations and pragmatic conditions, and correlative conjunctions are similar. Understanding the similarities in Chinese and Vietnamese progressive complex sentences is beneficial to Chinese-language students because it can maximize the positive transfer of their native language. Through the comparative study, many differences have also been identified such as punctuations, the amount of correlative conjunctions, and collocations. These variations can lead to the development of negative transfer for Vietnamese students.According to the results of the above study as well as using error analysis method, major errors have been recognized. These major errors are grouped into four categories including a native language’s negative transfer, overgeneralization, lack of knowledge, and inappropriate learning strategies. The supporting data of this study were obtained from the Beijing Language and Culture University’s "HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus" and Chinese College of Jinan University "Students’Interlanguage Corpus".Using the Vietnamese students’errors in learning progressive complex sentences as a stepping stone, the thesis provides recommendations for successfully teaching progressive complex sentences. Classroom teaching strategies should include comparative analysis, using inductive and summary method, designing task activities, utilizing of classroom games, and creating simulation scenarios. The assignments and activities design should pay special attention to pertinence, hierarchy, diversity, and interesting principles. Comprehending and applying the proposal into learning progressive complex sentences will be valuable in mastering the language.
