| With the development of the world economy, there are more and more transport activities at sea. As a result of force majeure and human factors, maritime accidents have occurred, especially oil tanker accidents, which has caused substantial economic losses and led to serious marine pollution. It has attracted people’ attention towards oil tanker safety and many countries have developed their regulations and policies about oil tanker safety, which produces a number of documents concerned. However, these documents are not only professional but also written in complex sentence structures which often contain more than one clause and several modifiers arranged in a word order different from that of Chinese. This has increased the difficulty of translation of these documents. Thus making an in-depth analysis of their word order features and explore appropriate translation methods can be a great help to conduct corresponding translation teaching and practice.Based on the translation of Maritime Safety Law and Policies of the European Union and the United Sates of America, the paper explores the translation methods about word order in the register of English maritime law and polices. The paper is composed of translation task, translation process, case studies and conclusion. The third part is the main body of this paper, which explains word order adjustment in phrases and long sentences of maritime legal documents. As for word order adjustment in long sentences, the writer mainly explains three methods, namely translating long sentences according to their original order, translating through proper adjustment and translating through division, in order to make translation more fluent and accurate on the basis of a better understand of the original text. |
