Yu Dafu, as an intellectual during the great transformation of Chinese society in the 20th century, accepted the traditional scholar-bureaucrat education and had deep classic culture accumulation; Yu Dafu, as the mainstay of "May 4th" New Culture Movement, showed the sentiment and deterioration of the educated youth at social transformation era in the form of autobiography; Yu Dafu, as one modern literati feeling sorrowful toward the contemporary world described his depressions and angry at the situation at that time by means of words. Strong lyricism becomes the typical characteristic of Yu Dafu’s prose. In recent 30 years, the educational circles have paid attention to the lyricism of Yu Dafu’s prose, but most of the people lay emphasis on the subjectivity of artistic methods and emotional expression, and considered "lyricism" only as the tendency of the poetry and artistic conception. This paper refers the lyric tradition of Chinese literature study of overseas scholars represented by Chen Shih-hsiang, Kao Yukung, Jaroslav and Wang Der-wei, explores the traditional idea and modern characteristics of the "lyric" subject of Yu Dafu’s prose and repeals how "the last generation of traditional intellectuals" inherit the emotional context of China in the context of modern Chinese and how they construct a modern lyric intellectual image in the text world.
