The rising and prevalence of the Internet bring us rich resources which we even can’t imagine before the time of technological leap. While the psychological problems of Internet addiction and dependence following stand out day by day.This paper conducts a survey about the situation of Internet addiction to the 367 freshmen from Hebei Normal University and Beijing Institute of Technology. At the same time, the author adopts 16 PF and SCL-90 to analyze the personality characteristics of students with Internet addiction. What’s more, it investigates the situation, the level of psychological health and their personality characteristics of college freshmen at present and analyze the reasons of Internet addiction and the difference between the factors of mental health and different dimension of personality characteristics. Finally, the author tentatively comes up with some research counter plan about the dangers of Internet addiction.The research shows that boys, only child, poor school performance and the college freshmen who didn’t join the clubs tend to be addicted to the internet. The rate of Internet addiction of the college freshmen who are under investigation is 13.9%. The scores of IAD students is higher than non-IAD showed in the SCL-90 in the aspect of obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism. The difference of nine aspects of warming, intelligence, assertiveness, persistency, social boldness, suspicion, anxiety, self-discipline, and tension has statistical significance.
