Translation regards information transformation as its own “task” and improving the cultural communication between countries as its own “duty”, so it is undoubtedly influenced by ecological ideology as ecology brings new blood to academic circle at home and abroad. With metaphorical analogies between translational Ecosystem and Natural Ecosystem, and conceptual borrowings such as “survival of the fittest” as its methodology, Eco-translatology explains and describes the essence, process, standard, principle, method and translation phenomena creatively from the perspective of Eco-translatology. What the eco-translatology focuses and emphasizes is a paranoiac view of translation and attention should be paid to the wholeness and holistic balance of the translated work since eco-translatology regards the scene of translation as a holistic ecosystem. From eco-translatological aspect, the essence of translation is a series of activities in which translators endeavor to make their translational products “survive” and even “thrive”. Researches about the paradigm mostly apply the theory of Translation as Adaption and Selection(Jiao Yang, 2001) and seldom carry out researches under the micro level to illustrate the essence of translation under the eco-translatological perspective. Therefore, there is still much scope for the study of translational eco-environment and this is the research direction of the thesis. The thesis is divided into five parts with the first part being about the introduction on research background and significance of this thesis. The second part of the thesis is literature review in which research will be conducted about the previous studies on Eco-translatology, studies on the translated versions of Vanity Fair as well as the reasons why Vanity Fair is chosen to be researched under Eco-translatology. Chapter three is about the theoretical frame work of this thesis under which the research will be conducted. Background, basic viewpoints and related applied researches of Eco-translatology will be introduced in this chapter. Chapter 4 is the mainbody of this thesis. The analysis of the Chinese versions of Vanity Fair respectively by Yang Bi as well as Jia Wenyuan and Jia Wenhao will be carried out in this chapter. Chapter 5 is the conclusion part and the main points we get are as follows::①.Though at its preliminary phase, eco-translatology is feasible in providing translation scholars with a new cut-in point, enabling them to probe into the translation problems from the ecological viewpoint. In contrast to the previous studies concentrating on the micro-level of eco-translatology, the current study goes to a great length to present a comprehensive framework of this theory, covering both the micro and macro-level, trying to uncover how the eco-translatology works in the interpretation and evaluation of the two different translation versions.②. Many factors such as the source text, personal intentions and the target readers play a crucial role in influencing the translators’ choice, requiring the translators to conduct their adaptive selections from linguistic, cultural as well as communicative dimension. Thus machinery equivalence without taking the three dimensions into consideration would be eliminated by the ecological system.③. Though there are metaphoric analogies between the translational Ecosystem and the Natural Ecosystem, and conceptual borrowing as its methodology, the principle of “survival of the fittest” does not function as it does in Natural system. There is no exact norm between “fit” and “unfit”, but only “fit” and “fitter”, because different translators make adaption and selection based on diverse era and meet different needs of the readers. Thus multiple symbioses, as multiple translated work of one original work, is allowed and accepted. At last, a better understanding of the two translators and the two versions is gained. Besides the three findings, limitations and future suggestions of the research are also provided by the author.
