An Experiment Report Of Reduction Strategy In English-chinese Simultaneous Interpreting

This is a report on the study of reduction strategy in simultaneous interpreting(television interview interpreting). It discusses and testifies why reduction strategy is used by interpreters in simultaneous interpreting.Reduction strategy is one of the essential strategies in simultaneous interpreting,which is rather demanding given the short time limit and enormous information load.Nowadays, several key foreign language universities, such as Beijing Foreign Studies University(BFSU), Shanghai International Studies University(SISU) and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies(GUFS), have offered simultaneous interpreting courses aimed at laying a solid foundation of simultaneous interpreting for students in future work or study. An increasing attention is being paid to reduction strategy and its usage in simultaneous interpreting. Since it optimizes interpreters’ performances, and is worth applying on a large scale, reduction strategy has gained its weight in the application and teaching of simultaneous interpreting.The author in this report designs, mainly on the basis of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of simultaneous interpreting and information structure theory, an experiment for 12 maser students majoring in MTI(interpreting) in an audio video and listening classroom. Before the experiment, the author hands out surveys to the interpreters,and then they begin interpreting accordingly. When the experiment finishes, the author collects surveys and audio clips. Then she makes detailed transcriptions of the audio clips, and analyzes the results. On one hand, the qualitative analysis lists out some representative examples to explain why reduction strategy is necessary and essential in simultaneous interpreting; on the other hand, the quantitative analysis illuminates the frequency of reductions in the interpreters’ interpretation performances in diagrams. In the end, the author arrives at a conclusion, and raises some constructive suggestions for interpreters.
