The translation studies from an ecological perspective started abroad, which laidthe foundation for the development of the translation studies from an ecologicalperspective in China. Hu Gengshen advanced the translation studies from an ecologicalperspective and set up a systematic theoretical framework for the translation studiesfrom an ecological perspective. In2008, Hu Gengshen officially put forward the concept"Eco-translatology" in his paper A Study of Eco-translatology published in ChineseTranslators Journal. Eco-translatology defines translation from the perspective of thetranslator as a selection activity of the translator s adaptation to fit the translationaleco-environment (Hu,2004:220-221). A translational eco-environment refers to theworld of the source text and the source/target languages comprising the linguistic, communicative, cultural and social aspects of translating as well as the author, the client, and the readers (Hu,2004:220). The translator plays a dominant role and is in thecentral position of the translation process (Hu,2004). This thesis discusses HowardGoldblatt s selective adaptations to the important elements in the translationaleco-environment and his adaptive selections and transformations from three dimensions, which are linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensional adaptive selections andtransformations. The purpose of the study is to discover the degree of the holisticadaptation and selection of the translated version through the analysis of HowardGoldblatt s selective adaptations to the important elements in the translationaleco-environment and his adaptive selections and transformations from the threedimensions. The author draws the conclusion that in the translation of Big Breasts&Wide Hips,Howard Goldblatt adapted himself to the source text, the target readers, the targetideology, and the publisher in the translational eco-environment. Moreover, HowardGoldblatt made effective adaptive selections and transformations mainly from the threedimensions, which are linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions. Howard Goldblatt, an experienced translator in translating Chinese literary works, whosebilingual competence, bicultural competence, and cautious attitude toward histranslation work help him to select and decide the form of the target text and to adapt tothe translational eco-environment. The form of the target text that Howard Goldblattdecided and selected to some extent is proved a translated version with a high degree ofholistic adaptation and selection in terms of reader s feedback. The degree of holisticadaptation and selection of Howard Goldblatt s translation of Big Breasts&Wide Hipscan be seen from the analysis of the degree of multi-dimensional transformations,"reader’ s feedback", and "the translator quality".
