The thesis has made a study on the subject-verb concord in English and its teaching in a senior high school from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. It has specifically answered the following questions:1. What is the essence of the subject-verb agreement in English sentences?2. What is the guiding principle for the subject-verb agreement?3. How is the number form of the predicate verb in English sentences determined?4. How should the teaching of the subject-verb agreement be carried out in the English class in senior high schools?The thesis has first studied the cognitive nature of the subject-verb agreement in English, proving that the nature of the subject-verb agreement is the concord between subject and verb in number meaning. In view of the nature of the subject-verb agreement, the author concludes that the guiding principle for the subject-verb agreement in English is the notional concord between subject and verb. According to this principle, the author has analyzed how to determine the number form of the predicate verb when the subject is a noun, a pronoun, a non-finite verb, a clause, or a coordinated unit.On the basis of the study above, the thesis has made a study of the teaching of the subject-verb agreement in English in high school English class. The study includes two parts:the study of the principle and methods for teaching subject-verb agreement from the perspective of cognition, and a teaching experiment. The cognitive teaching of subject-verb agreement lays emphasis on the teaching of the form, meaning and use according to the cognitive law. The author has conducted an experiment, in which the form, meaning and use related to subject-verb agreement are taught according to the principle and methods obtained above. The result of the experiment shows that the cognitive teaching method can help students grasp the language phenomenon of subject-verb agreement better than the traditional teaching method.
