A Translation Report Of The Stages Of Women’s Oral History Of The Oxford Handbook Of Oral History

The Oxford Handbook of Oral History is an academic work of oral history.It was published by the Oxford University Press in the Great Britain. The task of the project is to translate the book from English to Chinese. The original text is the chapter 11 of the book. The report focuses on the translating process and difficulties and coping strategies of that chapter’s translation.In the report, the author described the details of the translating process. Firstly,the author introduced the source and requirements of the translating task as well as the the background knowledge of oral history.Secondly, the author analyzed the original text with Newmark ‘s theory and then applied Yanfu’s principles of “faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance” to the translation project by analyzing the original text. Thirdly, the author used twenty five examples to illustrate the concrete application of Yanfu’s theory. Finally, the author summarized up the whole translating process and shared the experiences. According to Newmark’s text typology, the original text is an informative text, therefore the author should focus on the faithfulness and accuracy in the translating process.The translation project has practical significance in enlarging the category of informational text translation, and also enriches the study of translation of historical materials.
