When readers or scholars begin to read The Tale of Genji, they would firstly think it is a work focusing on male and paying more attention to Hikaru Genji, neglecting the existence of females. As a matter of fact, these females are what Murasaki Shikubu’s description is to stress on. Therefore, this thesis is to analyze several females whose love stories are described in different types, and furthermore, to explore the potential meaning of description on those types of love created in this work by Murasaki Shikibu.This thesis is in three sections. The first part is the “jealousy love type” of female. Women with typical jealousy psychology, such as Lady Kiritsubo, Aoi no Ue, and Murasaki, are to taken as the major objects to analyze this type of love and deeply look for the major cause of female jealousy in love by introducing these females’ background of family, education and character, and therefore, to explore the meanings of these types of love created by Murasaki Shikibu.The second section is the “masochistic love type” of female. Women who are of masochistic psychology in love, such as Murasaki, Suetsumuhana and Hanachirusatoare taken as the major objects to analyze this type of love and discovery that this kind of masochistic psychology actually doesn’t their real will by introducing contemporary cultural background, and therefore, to explore the meanings of this type of love created by Murasaki Shikibu.The three section is the “Electra complex love type” of female. Women who are in Electra complex love type, such as Tam Cung and Murasaki, are taken as the major objects to analyze this love type of female. Their Electra complex loves are mainly showed by their absolute obedience and dependence to their father and males due to the contemporary reality. It also analyzes Murasaki’s Electra complex love is based on their absolute obedience, and then further look into the reasons of female’s obsessively obedience in love, as well as the meanings of repeat description on this type of love created by Murasaki Shikibu.All in all, this thesis is to analyze the love types of females created in The Tale of Genji by giving priority to the love types of jealousy, masochistic psychology and Electra complex. It is also to show the potential meaning of description on these love types of females and integrate females’ own characters, contemporary background, social ethics, sexual relationship as well as some theories about female psychology constrained by eras.
