Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of Chinese Painting(chapter Three)

This is a report on the re-translation of Chapter Three(Lucid Mountains and Remote Streams) of the book Chinese Painting, included in Cultural China Series. Among these books, Chinese Painting introduces the painting in China, including its development history, famous painters and their representative works with vivid descriptions and fantastic paintings. However, the dominance of flowing sentences with Chinese characteristics poses a special challenge for translators. The translated version represents information of the source text well enough. However, it doesn’t pay much attention to the differences in syntactic features of the two languages. This report will analyze this problem based on the author’s re-translated version and summarize effective ways to avoid Chinglish in the translation of publicity materials.This report consists of five parts. Chapter One is an introduction to the project, including overviews of the source text, translated text and the re-translation. Chapter Two focuses on the syntactic differences between Chinese and English. Chapter Three discusses the syntactic features of the source text and major problems in the translated version. Chapter Four introduces steps and strategies the author used in the re-translation. Chapter Five is a summary of what the author has learned and problems to be solved.
