Chinese-characters-used Japanese words account for nearly half of the Japanese vocabulary. Some of them are borrowed directly from Chinese, while others are created by the Japanese. They make it very convenient for Chinese translators to translate, but they also cause translators to make mistakes easily because of misunderstandings of them. This thesis intends to provide some advices for the translation of Chinese-characters-used Japanese words through the author’s practice. The Chinese-characters-used Japanese words to be studied in this thesis are selected from Chapter 2 Section 4 to Chapter 3 Section 8 of the book From Restraining To Aging. The author collected all the Chinese-characters-used Japanese words and compared them with corresponding Chinese words. Combining the study results of many scholars, the author classified the Chinese-characters-used Japanese words into homographs and heterographs. Then with typical example words and sentences, the author conducted a concrete analysis and elaboration on the translation procedures and methods of different types of Chinese-characters-used Japanese words. The author concluded the translation methods in practice and clarified them into four types:literal translation; free translation; omission; and interpretation. The author also indicated that when practicing these methods, we should verify the accuracy of translation, filter the Internet information and combine different translation methods flexibly.
