On The Realization Of Intertextual Intentionality In Translation

The theory of intertextuality was first put forward by Julia Kristeva. As a ubiquitous language phenomenon, intertextuality mainly illustrates the immanent relationships between texts by emphasizing that a text is not self-existent, which has close relationships with its inter-texts and the whole social cultural knowledge system. The intertextual signal is essential evidence to master intertextuality. A profound and thorough understanding of the intertextual signal needs to find the corresponding intertextual reference by placing the intertextual signal into the social culture background. As the basis of the general semiotic description of a given reference, the intertextual intentionality which is contained in macro-culture should be retained to the ulmost extent in the translation, and the intertextual reference at the linguistic level should be maintained simultaneously. Hatim and Mason first brought the theory of intertextuality into the study of translation, which paved the way for the following studies of intertextual translation.With Feng Ru Fei Tun and its translated version as linguistic data, this thesis adopts the classifications of intertextuality and extratextuality and carries on a contrastive study in order to make a judgment whether the translation is good from the perspective of intertextual intentionality. By adopting semantic translation and communicative translation, Goldblatt’s translation is mainly author-oriented and close to the original language. In the process of translation, Goldblatt omits some culture-loaded expressions, for example, some ballads in the novel, to avoid the hindrance of the target text in the target culture. The pivotal point of Goldblatt’s translation aims at conveying and maintaining the original intertextual intentionality and cultural connotation, and he achieves his goal generally.
