| This paper is mainly based on the theories of Semantic Field and Discourse Cohesion. From the perspective of unexpected semantics, three Chinese adverbs "Dao", "Bing" and "Ye" are chosen as the research objects. This study focuses on exploring their similarities and differences in semantic features and expression mechanisms when connecting unexpected semantics.Chinese scholars have successfully achieved in the case studies of the three words, but they have still leaved some space to enrich and deepen, especially in semantic aspects. With the language data from corpus, dictionaries and examples of previous research, we have analyzed the typical meanings and individual meanings of the three words. Under each meaning, we provide the particular expression mechanism and condition limits.By the end, we summarize the meanings of the three words and compare their similar features. The result shows that "Dao", "Bing" and "Ye" share the similar typical meanings under unexpected semantics, while "Bing" is strong in its objectivity and "Ye" is accompanied by its subjectivity and euphemistic tone. The use of "Dao" is the widest. "Bing" and "Ye" both have disputing feature, but the expression mechanisms are not the same. Similarly, both "Dao" and "Ye" may appear in concessive context, while the semantic conditions are restricted.Previous studies mostly apply Semantic Field Theory on notional words. This study focuses on function words, which is a new try in semantic field. The findings of the research might play a helpful role in class teaching and compiling teaching materials. |
