| The source text of this translation project is an article by Thomas R.H.Havens:Government and the Arts in Contemporary Japan. As a typical argumentation,it elaborates on the arts policy in contemporary Japan. While reviewing the first version of the translation, many unidiomatic expressions were found, mainly in semantic cohesion,so this thesis, adopting the theory of semantic cohesion by Halliday and Hasan, addresses the translationess problem.By doing so,it aims to raise concern about the translationess in semantic cohesion, and therefore help to improve the quality of translation. This thesis consists of three parts.Part one is the introduction, which summarizes the style of the source text, defines "translationess" for sake of our analyzation and provides an overview about the theory of semantic cohesion by Halliday and Hasan. As the body of the thesis, the second part classifies the translationess in semantic cohesion into four categories, namely translationess in reference, translationess in substitution and ellipsis, translationess in conjunction and translationess in lexical cohesion, and addresses each of them in details by examples. The last part is the conclusion,in which the cause of these problems is analyzed and summarized and the weak-points and deficiencies of this thesis are acknowledged. |
