Wuyi Xiang locates at the south bank of Qinhuai River, Nanjing city, Jiangsu Province. It is an ancient street built in the Six Dynasties and also an important image used by Chinese poets. The study on literary history of Wuyi Xiang will be helping us to understand the literal meaning and the meaning within. This thesis further provides a new angle to study how Chinese classical poem convey emotion and why was Jinling city continually being depicted in poems. This thesis comprises seven chapters:Chapter One, the introduction, elaborates on the angle the thesis stands at, the methods it adopted and its meaning. In addition, some former historical achievement. And I put forward a view that studying the image is vitally important to studying Wuyi Xiang literary history. The first chapter to the forthth chapter are written in chronological order, it analyses the literary events in Wuyi Xiang image’s development, from The Six Dynasties to Qing Dynasty. The first chapter is mainly about the connections between the Wuyi Xiang and Wang-Xie clan during The Six Dynasties, and it considers that the deep poetic meaning of Wuyi Xiang originates in a special aristocratic culture. The second chapter is mainly about the connections between the Wuyi Xiang and the urban space. I consider that the stagnant condition of Jinling city was an important cause of Wuyi Xiang’s meaning in Rise and Fall, except the stories in Six Dynasties. Besides, it talks about that Wuyi Xiang once stood in urban space as a fascinating scenery for a long period, during Ming and Qing Dynasty. The third chapter talks about that under the background when the Confucian thoughts reigned, the mental effect it brought to scholars who favored writing about Wuyi Xiang, among the middle turn of the Song Dynasty and the turn of the Song to Yuan Dynasty. The forth chapter is mainly about the connections between the Wuyi Xiang and the scholars in Ming dynasty. On one hand, for Jinling city was set as capital, and Wuyi Xiang mainly caught on in the writings about dynastic atmosphere and city life in jinling city. On the other hand, because of the identical structure between Wuyi Xiang (Jinling city) and the Ming dynasty, Wuyi Xiang recorded the indignations and desperations of the adherents of the former Ming Dynasty in the turn of the Ming to Qing Dynasty. The fifth chapter is the study about the Wuyi Xiang literary history under the theoretical perspective of "Er Bing" and Interleaving. On one hand, due to the mythology about Wuyi Xiang and its fabulous appearance, it constructed a image that the scholars pursue eternally. On the other hand, the meaning of Wuyi Xiang image was suspected and rebuilt by Neo-Confucianism, the Buddhism and the Taoism, therefore, the deconstructions on its meaning makes it be more multivariate. The lasth chapter is the epilogue. Basing on the summary of the whole thesis, a illustration it contains to brief the origin, kernel meaning and diversed literal meanings of Wuyi Xiang image, also to show the literary events in Wuyi Xiang’development. In this thesis, that the cultural soul of Chinses classical poetic history and the lyric tradition of Jinling city are the root and pulse of Wuyi Xiang literary history, it is represents the Confucian ethical cognitive schema of Chinese classical scholars and shows the development and being accepted of Jiangnan cultural identity in the history of Chinese culture.
