A Project Report On The Translation Of Women And Gender

This paper is a project report on the translation of Chapter Nine of the book, A Companion to Colonial America, edited by Daniel Vickers. The book consists of 23 chapters covering various topics such as politics, colony, ecology and others. Chapter Nine, Women and Gender, written by Carol Karlsen, can be categorized as historical writing. This chapter concentrates on studies carried out by scholars during the period of 1970s,1980s and 1990s. Those scholars focus their attention on the low social status that Native American women, European American women and other Colonial American women enjoy in 17th and 18th century. Through all those scholars’hard work, the author shows readers a clear picture of the colonial women’s real lives and their low social status during the colonial time.The report is comprised of four sections, namely, introduction of the project, description of the task, case studies and conclusion. Several parts, namely, the introduction of the text author, preparation made before translation, explanation of difficult and important points and theory application are also included in the report. In the part of the analysis of the difficult and important points, the translator has listed the main reasons for the occurrence of those difficult points. In the part of the case studies, the "Plural Complimentarism of Translation Standard" is explained in detail.Through the whole process, the translator has gained several insights. Firstly, to be a qualified translator means well preparation before translating. Then, one needs to choose the suitable theory for application. In the end, as a translator, we need continuous study throughout the whole lifetime.
