With the rapid development of urbanization process, the establishment of city brand gradually acquires its importance. The public sign system, as an indispensable element of city’s normal operation, is closely related to the construction and development of city image as well as city brand. In the past, the public signs are relatively independent in design, which often focuses merely on the figure of signs or the expressions of information function. With continuous improvement of city brand nowadays, public sign system that contains only functional communication is just far from satisfying the needs of a city to build up its brand and upgrade its image.Governors will conduct positioning and development of a city’s brand after referring to its different background such as geographical environment and historical culture, etc. A successful brand makes a city more attractive, which will lead to industrial development of the whole urban area and then enhance its competitiveness. As a very key part in the operation of a city, the public sign system is a kind of facility which is mostly used by local residents and foreign tourists during their travel. The public sign system possesses basic functions such as road information transmission, basic regional introduction, as well as assisting with public traffic operations, etc. What’s more, the quality and level of public sign system will directly affect the living comfort feeling of local residents as well as the direct impression of foreign tourists, which will influence the overall evaluation of social groups on the city.This thesis aims at taking city brand as background and public sign system as basic point; it focus on how public sign system is built up under the background of city brand and how it expresses the core information of city brand to audience. Public signs in new era will act on a communication media in the marketing of city brand, and its construction should be positioned according to the brand of a city; typical elements ought to be extracted under the background of city brand, and secondary positioning design should be used during the implementation process, which enables a state of harmony and unity between signs and surrounding environment. Finally, it combines the spirit, historical and cultural characteristics as well as humanistic concern with public sign system and then conveys city brand information to audience. It facilitates the audience during travelling, and meanwhile deepens their understanding and identity of the city brand which establishes a good image of the city. Good public signs improves the city brand, and good city brand will in turn enlarge the development space of its public signs-as a result of that it forms a virtuous cycle. Thus the city can win acknowledgement of others, which makes the city brand more attractive that promotes the comprehensive development of surrounding areas and enhances the overall competitiveness of the city.This thesis starts with the basic theory in relation to signs and city brand, and then it conducts analysis research to the specific cases of public signs of Xi’an subway; it strives to find a common point between the establishment of public signs and the construction of city brand positioning, which realizes a real help of the design of public signs to the construction of city brand and finally sets foot on a better development path of city public sign system under the background of city brand.
