Re-evaluate The Female Writers Of May Fourth Period

The female writers of May Fourth period are the first generation of modern writers,they can’t be ignored. In the previous literary history books,they seemed to be insignificant.Only Binxin, Luyin, Madam Gan and Bai Wei existed,Chen Hengzhe, Su Xuelin, Yuan Changing, Ling Shuhua and others were forgotten.Luckily, in the specialized female writers’ history, we can see the full view of their lives and works.In the past time,only the works about social issues can be widely spread. Since the 1980 s,along with the re-excavation of the New Culture Movement and the New Literary Movement, the collation and evaluation of these writers have been developed. The studies of the May Fourth female writers’ works, letters, biographies, etc. came out, so their images in history have become more plump.As de Beauvoir and other feminist theory translated into China, more and more people began to use feminist to interpret those writers, gender characteristics of this group of writers were underlined finally.However, at the same time, the special historical circumstance and discourse environment have been ignored in varying degrees, feminist researchers generally believe that the works of the May Fourth female writers are lack of criticism of the patriarchy intensity, lack of modern women gender consciousness and other issues.Based on the study conducted on May Fourth female writer group in literary history and historical evaluation, we prefer to make personalized interpretation, with the use of broader theoretical perspectives and more tolerant cultural mentality, to explore these works’ connotation for enlightenment, for women with the problems of modern society in China. May Fourth female writers’ creations are loyal to the basic principles of "People’s Literature", by their infantile expression, they kept slightly showing their opinions, including the desire for life, love and social responsibility,revealing the humanity glory. They were pursuing for the individual liberation and personal independence, advocating free marriage and other ideological agitation performance, the sincere women naturally expressed special emotional appeal,exposing the deviation between their expressions and the enlightenment discourse,which enabled people to see the special psychological structure and emotional approach. While May Fourth female writers’ love stories, speak highly of love,marriage and other sexual relations, there are still some reservations and neutralization, which reveals the fact that the women with awakening of individual consciousness are still facing with their fate of objectified,we can see their call for body liberation. They showed the sorrows they suffered in order to maintain the dignity of life, love and marriage, while facing the life circles of becoming wives and mothers,which was denied by torchbearers.The prior studies neglected the psychological characteristics of female gender analysis or underestimate the effects of May Fourth Movement, we plan to study the May Fourth female writers’ attitude towards gender roles of women, physical, emotional and other ways, by listening to these real life experiences condensed female voice, to understand these women writers’ desire for independence and freedom as individuals, as well as women live this double social identity thinking, thereby allowing the May Fourth female writers group in literary history more vivid, and feminist studies at some biased reflection.
