Qualitative Research On Vocabulary Intelligibility Of Yining Dialect And The Surrounding Chengdu Dialect

Based on the Chinese language contact theory, this thesis collects dialect vocabulary both from daily and characteristic vocabulary from Yining City and the surrounding Chengdu City to qualitative analysis of both vocabulary system, and to measure and study the intelligibility of their vocabulary. First to determine research measures and basic principles of intelligibility dialect research, and then look into the dialect vocabulary contact to calculate and analysis the results of the survey.This paper mainly adopts literature analysis, field investigation, comparison from time,statistical analysis and other research methods. This paper collected daily and characteristic vocabularies. Daily vocabulary includes 445 old-style vocabularies from two dialects, while characteristic vocabulary contains 404 old-style Chengdu vocabularies, and272 old Yining vocabularies. These information comes from two the master’s degree papers and three dictionaries. After research, this thesis collected 445new-style daily words from both sides, while 404 new-style characteristic words from Chengdu dialect and 272 new-style characteristic words from Yining dialect. In this paper, the design of daily vocabulary questionnaire is based on the Chinese dialect words survey, characteristics vocabulary list is derived based on predecessors’ research results. All survey data processed and statistical analyzed by EXCEL, and adopted the theory of “Method of word formation morpheme”,which was proposed by Prof. William S-Y.Wang and Shen Zhongwei.Through the qualitative analysis of lexical system, both dialects have the following characteristics:(1) Two dialects are different from basic mandarin vocabulary and general vocabulary;(2) Vocabulary structure of the two dialects are mainly compound words, which can highlight both additive and superimposed the formation characteristics of the vocabulary;(3) The two dialects are have wealth of the ancient Chinese words, modal particles, degree adverbs and geographical nouns.Through the research, calculation and analysis of the two dialects, the results show that the daily vocabularies have higher intelligibility than characteristic vocabulary; while the intelligibility of new-style vocabularies is higher than old-style vocabularies, and the two dialects have homologous relation.In addition, there are the following factors affects the intelligibility of the two dialects:(1) The more affected by mandarin, the dialects’ intelligibility is higher;(2) The longer the contact time between dialect and words’ intelligibility is higher;(3) The same dialect, the intelligibility of Muslim Chinese is higher than Han Chinese;(4) Religious people have higher intelligibility than people without religion.This study can provide certain basis to comparative research between Xinjiang Chinese dialects and comparative dialects study.
