Cabinet Image:the Discourse Dilemma And Development Trend Of Queer Cinema In Mainland China

In recent years, Queer and Queer culture has become a heated research topic in western countries. Since the 1990 s, thanks to its great inclusiveness, it rapidly integrates with other disciplines. And as a critical tool, queer theory is also widely applied in the analysis of films, which acts as a pioneer in the film industry. Especially after the "New Queer Cinema" campaign, the production of queer film has entered a new stage of development. In the recent two years, queer films have won numerous awards in various film festivals. Besides, "Queer Palm Award" "Teddy Bear Award" and "Queer Lion Award”, targeting LGBT-related movies, have been set up respectively by the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, which arouses a widespread concern and discussion among the public and the filming field.There is an increasing number of studies on Queer theory and Queer Cinema overseas, while in China the term ‘Queer Cinema’ is known by few. However, after experiencing "symbolic extinction" in the early 1990 s and the Queer’s bold emerging in the 1990 s, Queer Cinema in Mainland China finds some new features in the new millennium. With some new factors like the inclusiveness of the social environment, the formation of new media environment and the increasing appearance of Queer groups, Queer Cinema’s living environment has been improved in Mainland China to some extent, providing new opportunities for its future development. This paper takes Queer Cinema in Mainland China as the research object, targeting movies directed by Mainland directors whose themes are the survival conditions of queer community in Mainland China or the ones reflect it. It makes the developing process of Queer Cinema in Mainland clear and analyzes their imaging features, trying to make some in-depth analysis and discussion from multiple perspectives about why Queer Cinema in mainland China falls into voiceless predicament and future directions the mainland Queer Cinema will choose in the new discourse environment.
