| Zhang Guruo is a famous translator and educator in China, and his most representative works are the translations of a series of Hardy’s writings. His translations are unique and elegant which enjoy a great reputation at home and abroad. Based on Polysystem theory, this thesis tries to make a relatively systemic appreciation of Zhang Guruo’s translation characteristics and explore the reasoning behind his translations by the analysis of the position of translated literature as well as the life experiences of the writer and translator. This thesis will make readers get a better understanding of Zhang Guruo’s works and provide some contributions to the further translation studies on Zhang Guruo.Polysystem theory pays attention to both the static text and the dynamic process of text production. This thesis makes an analysis of three related factors according to Even-Zohar’s understanding about the conditions under which a translator works, that is, the position of translated literature, the life experiences of the writer and translator. Besides, lots of historical facts are adopted and the text analysis of translation works Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, and The Return of the Native are done in this thesis to make a brief exploration and analyzation of the deep origins of Zhang Guruo’s translation characteristics behind the text.Through this thesis, readers can find that the formation of Zhang Guruo’s translation characteristics is under the influences from a variety of factors, such as the secondarization process of Chinese literature and the canonized process of translated literature which resulted in the position change of translated literature, the personal life experiences and so on. Besides, those factors interact with each other as a whole in an open and dynamic polysystem which is heterogeneous and hierarchized so that the process of translation becomes very complex and the translator can get his unique and various translation characteristics. |
