Writing teaching is an important part of senior high English teaching. The competence of writing not only affects students’ score in examination but also interfere with communication in daily life. The position of writing is important. However, in practical English teaching, students’ ability to write is not so good. This problem has many reasons. The thesis attempts to apply cohesion and coherence theory to tackle the problems in writing teaching in senior high school.The thesis contains six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, including background of cohesion and coherence theory, research stage at home and abroad, significance of the study and research methods applied in this thesis. The second chapter is studies on writing teaching in senior school. Started from definition of writing, requirements for writing teaching are gradually be analyzed in this chapter. The third chapter gives a general introduction to the cohesion and coherence theory. The definition and characteristic of cohesion and coherence theory, as well as its formation and theoretical foundation, are interpreted in this chapter. The forth chapter is empirical study, in which problems of cohesion and coherence in English writing are found. Strategies to apply cohesion and coherence theory into writing teaching are put forward in the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter concludes the research. The enlightenment and disadvantage are also included in this part.The innovation of this thesis is the trial to apply cohesion and coherence theory into writing teaching in senior high school. The thesis contains not only theoretical explanation, but also the analysis of practical samples. According to data of the experiment, cohesion and coherence theory do help much to writing teaching in senior high school.
