Teaching observations have shown that various problems can easily be found in compositions written by Chinese senior high school students, especially in lexical application. In a way, lexical teaching works as the most common and direct way for the input of students’ lexical knowledge, thus exerting far-reaching effects on students’ lexical proficiency.Considering that the lexical chunks are the unity of grammatical rules, semantic meanings and pragmatic contexts, the author attempts to apply the lexical approach to practical English teaching in senior high school and design a series of exercises which aim at helping students master large quantities of lexical chunks. With this experiment, the study will attest whether the lexical approach has a positive impact on enhancing students’ lexical awareness and lexical proficiency in writing. Results show that the application of lexical approach in experimental class makes a difference to students’ writing achievements and lexical proficiency in writing. That is, students got higher scores in writing and the values of lexical diversity, complexity and density in their compositions have been significantly improved after months of lexical approach teaching. Meanwhile, students’ abilities to beware and identify the chunks have obviously been improved. Therefore, lexical approach does have a positive effect on senior high students’ lexical proficiency in writing, thus it has its practical significance.
