English writing is of great importance according to the requirements of the “ordinary high school English Curriculum Standard(Experiments)” and the college entrance examinations.However,English writing is far from satisfactory.The Lexical Chunks was put forward by Becker in 1976.Lexical chunk is a word-unit of two or more words,which semantically and/or syntactically forms a meaningful and inseparable unit and is considered as the ideal basic unit.The advantages of lexical chunks in English learning are more and more dominant.When memorizing the chunks as the basic unit,the students are able to output English fluently and accurately by extracting and utilizing lexical chunks.Studying and analyzing the application of lexical teaching methods in English class,the thesis is intended to address the following questions:(1)Does the teaching of lexical chunks improve the students' writing competence? If yes,to what degree?(2)Dose the teaching of lexical chunks raise students' awareness of identifying and using lexical chunks? If yes,to what degree?Thus,the author carried out an experiment for one semester.Senior two students of class one and class three in Ru Gao No.1 Middle School are selected as participants,whose English competence is of no significant differences.Class one is treated as the experimental group while the other one is the control group,both of which are taught by the author and not received any systematic English writing training.The experimental group is taught under the guidance of the theory of the lexical chunks.The input of lexical chunks,consolidation and output are used in concrete text teaching.Meanwhile,the control group is still taught in a traditional way.After the one-term experiment,based on the data from the tests and the questionnaires,the following results are obtained:1.The teaching of lexical chunks can effectively improve the students' writing competence.2.The teaching of lexical chunks can effectively raise students' awareness ofidentifying and using lexical chunks.
