With the development of science and technology, wireless communication technology with the characters of dynamic self-organizing, low power consumption has been replacing wired communication gradually. The wireless network can provide more and more applications in our life. Among many technologies in wireless sensor networks, Zigbee protocol has been widely used in recent years. However, whether it can provide an efficient, reliable and energy-saving environment for communication is needed to be proved. So in order to achieve better applications in wireless multimedia sensor network, we plan to do researches and analysis for the purpose of optimizing several parts of Zigbee protocol, including power management, network maintenance, data(especially multimedia data) transmission and so on.In this paper, we first introduce the concept and structure of wireless sensor network, and study each system module in Zigbee protocol stack. Then we put forward three kinds of optimization requirements, including power management, network maintenance, data(especially multimedia data) transmission in Zigbee protocol. Then, we do researches and analysis in energy management of Zigbee protocol and optimize the defect.Furthermore, we propose an efficient and energy saving sleep scheduling for the whole network. In the part of network maintenance, we add a more complete node management mechanism to improve the ability of maintaining. Finally, we do lots of experiments and several optimizations in data transmission module.In this paper, we do researches, analysis and optimizations in power management, network maintenance and data transmission of Zigbee protocol. As a result, we achieve more and richer sleep scheduling, more comprehensive network maintenance and more efficient transmission of multimedia data. We also upgrade the Zigbee protocol from version Zigbee2006to Zigbee2007. Finally, we apply all these achievements to the Smart Building System, which is a wireless sensor network of monitoring the environment of buildings.
