The erosion and the accretion are the dynamic-balance existence form that a shoreline adapts to the relative steady climate, the change of the ocean dynamic, and the runoff into the sea,and also the self-protection mechanisms for the shoreline to adapt to extreme climate. However,as the sea level rising, the runoff reducing and the establishments of unreasonable structures, shorelines are suffering unexpectable erosion. The extent, the frequency and the intensity of the erosion are out of control, which is making shoreline resources unsustainable.Building groynes and breakwaters a common measure of shoreline protection, serving for innumerable shorelines so far. However, there is no generally accepted referenced specification for their design, and some poorly-designed projects cannot meet the expectation of protection. It is urgent to research the mechanisms of groynes and breakwaters and to summarize and offer the recommendation of their designs. In this paper, some fruits relative to groynes and breakwaters design were briefly introduced, and the main points of their design were illustrated. Also, some common design methods were introduced.Based on the previous work, the design parameters on specific conditions were recommended after researching the change of the current and the sediment movement after the establishment of structures and discussing the accretion capability of the structures with different design parameters.Further more, the best suitable distance between the groyne and the breakwater was discussed and the design of the breakwaters-and-groynes combination is demonstrated with the example of the protection project in the Lunar Bay.
