The pollution of water resource reservoirs has become more and more serious because of the effects caused by rainfall, human activities and biological metabolism. It's the key link for water investigating and monitoring to acquire representative samples and conduct subsequent experiments by effective sampling methods. Among those three kinds of water pollutants, suspended substance is much more severe because it contains complex biochemical process which is able to absorb a variety of harmful pollutants. However, samplers special for acquiring suspended substance are rare. In most cases, water samplers and filter screen for plankton are used instead. These devices can't meet the demands which will badly restrict the development of measurement for water. Thus, it's urgent to design and develop a sampler which can acquire suspended samples specifically.This paper, from the view of device designing and developing, mainly researches the structure and control system design of the suspended sampler. First of all, focusing on the problem of blocking and sample's losing representation in current samplers, we propose that we can conduct these two steps at the same time by using sampling device. Based on this, our paper develops the sampler which can acquire the suspended samples just in situ and make disturbance as little as possible. In this device, there are three layers for storing suspended samples. Particularly, the water inlet is set to be on the bottom and the outlet is on the top which can solve the problem of blocking effectively. Secondly, concentrating on the problem of low degree of automation and low efficiency of sampling, this paper develops the monitoring system based on single chip microcomputer. By attaching to the sampler, this system will also go underwater to collect, transfer, and save the data. In the corresponding upper computer, sampling process will be monitored in real time. Suspended substance sampler attached with monitoring system has been tested in different reservoirs for many times. It can be seen from the sampling experiments that our self-designed sampler can acquire suspended substance by layers precisely in different depth. In the whole sampling process, sampler's working condition underwater can be clearly monitored in upper computer, which will greatly increase the automation degree and sampling efficiency.
