A Research On The Representation Of Arti Stic Conceptualization In Contemporary Chinese-style Costume Design

Zen begins with Bodhidharma and prospers with the Sixth Patriarch Huineng.In the middle period of Tang Dynasty Zen integrates with Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism and then it becomes a philosophy with Chinese characteristics.And the“enlightenment” held by it exerts positive influence on oriental aesthetics and artistic way of thinking.In today’s high-civilized society,people ’ s material well-being has improved to satisfaction.However,the abundant worldly possessions don’t contribute to the pursuit of self-worth.Therefore,people begin to seek psychological comfort in various ways.Zen is based upon the theory of mind and nature and insists on the cultivation of mind and nature to achieve sublimation.It is a philosophy about the getting rid of worries,the awareness of life and the pursuit of splendid mental outlook.Knowing it as a way of cultivating mind and nature many people are in the pursuit of Zen and gradually it is integrated with modern life.This thesis started with influence of Zen on people’s way of life,attitudes towards life and aesthetic views.Then,the theory of mind and nature altogether with the artistic concept proposed by Zen find explicit expression in Chinese-style costumes by the use of patterns and character images.This thesis firstly illustrates the development of Zen and the main idea of the artistic concept of Zen.Then it analyzesthe relationship between the artistic concept of Zen and the transformation of Chinese-style costumes.Furthermore,the relationship between Zen and costume design is talked about from the following aspects: inter-promoting relation,intelligence of myriads of things,clearness,quietness,elegance and artistic conception.Therefore,it paves the way for the application of Zen to Chinese-style costume design.In the afterward,this thesis focuses on the influence of “shape”and “implication” on modeling,color and fabrics for the reason that “shape” is the carrier of “implication” and“implication” is the sublimation of “shape”.So Chinese costume design is mainly concerned with the demonstration of“shape” and “implication”.In the end,the thesis elucidates the application of the following concepts to costume design namely,empty equals full,less is more and simplicity.The thesis emphasized the harmonious relationships among human,thing(clothes)and environment.And the goal of design should embody the concept of returning to nature,accentuate the fabrics and best fit of clothes.Moreover,With the integration of the artistic concept of Zen costume design is ought to reflects the genuine needs of costumes.
